Extreme Heat and Blown-Out Windshields

Can slamming a car door on a hot day cause the windshield or rear glass to blow out or shatter? Until today I would have said “no”. This is what happened. A customer brought their late model Honda Civic in for routine maintenance this morning. We parked the car in the holding area. About an hour later the technician assigned to perform the requested services got in the car to drive it into his bay. When he closed the door the back glass shattered. No one can say for sure if the rear glass was already cracked which could have contributed to the problem. All we know is…it happened…and we are replacing the glass at no charge to the customer. We are now rolling down the windows a little while cars sit outside on hot days-just in case there is something to the notion!
